Parabrisas y gricos

Parabrisas are windshield wipers. However, my wife has a more interesting word: "gricos" (to the English ear it sounds like "grEE-kohs") which I think is a fascinating word and don't know if it's simply Salvadoran slang or her own slang or universal but I feel that the word was made from the squeaky sound that it makes when it slides across the windshield in the rain.
